Scholactivism and the Global South, Hong Kong

Date

December 12-13, 2024

Description

The University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Law is set to host a significant two-day workshop titled “Scholactivism and the Global South” on December 12-13, 2024. This collaborative event brings together prominent scholars, activists, and researchers from across the Global South to explore the intersection of scholarship and activism. The program features a comprehensive agenda, beginning with opening remarks by Dean Hualing Fu and introductions to the project by Cynthia Farid, Sergio Latorre, and Yugank Goyal.

A highlight of the first day includes a keynote address by M (Jun) Borras, followed by four panel discussions focusing on regional perspectives from Africa, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and South Asia. The second day emphasizes roundtable discussions on critical themes such as intergenerational scholar activism, perils and precarity in activist scholarship, and practical applications of scholar activism. The workshop is supported by several prestigious institutions, including HKU Law, FLAME University, the Centre for Knowledge Alternatives, CCPL (Centre for Comparative and Public Law), Universidad del Norte, and ERGO Trust (Bangladesh). This event represents a significant effort to understand and document how scholars in the Global South combine academic work with activism to address pressing social issues.
