Description
The South African Human Rights Commission hosted a significant workshop titled “Scholar-Activism in the Global South: The Role of Scholar-Activism in African Human Rights Advocacy and Struggle.” The two-and-a-half-hour program (10:05 AM – 12:45 PM SAST) featured prominent speakers and activists discussing the intersection of scholarship and human rights advocacy in Africa. The event opened with remarks from Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi, followed by an introduction to the Network of Scholar-Activism and Law in the Global South by Cynthia Farid from the University of Hong Kong.
Participants
The workshop included addresses by notable speakers including Professor Luke Sinwell from the University of Johannesburg, Nerima Were, and Dr. Boaventura Monjane from PLAAS (Institute for Poverty, Land, and Agrarian Studies). The program was structured to encourage dialogue through two Q&A sessions moderated by commission members Naleli Morojele and Lee-Anne Germanos. After a brief comfort break midway, the workshop concluded with closing remarks from the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions and final words from Commissioner Philile Ntuli, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to exploring the role of academic activism in African human rights work.
